Repairs completed, Megargel set off on Saturday morning, June 3, for Laramie. The view coming into the city, at the edge of the Continental Divide, thrilled him, even if the icy blasts of wind reminded him of the long Buffalo winter.

He and Stanchfield overnighted on a ranch west of Laramie and left the next day, when they saw prairie schooners, one of the iconoclastic symbols of the Old West. “Schooners, usually a single wagon,” Megargel wrote, “drawn by two or four horses, or mules, with one or two saddle ponies and a cow tied behind, are visible for miles, their big white canvas bow tops glistening in the sunshine.”

Over the next two days, Megargel would miscalculate the depth of a creek they had attempted to ford and lose hours freeing their car from the cold waters. He and Stanchfield would lose more time repairing their radiator, damaged by sagebrush. They would drive through weather that Megargel described as the equal to any he had experienced in New York. “We were not prepared for snowstorms,” he wrote, “and with the wind whistling around our heads and the snow blowing in flurries around us, we felt the cold keenly.”
